Overview of "Afraid" (2024)

"Afraid" is a techno-horror thriller directed by Chris Weitz, starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston. The film revolves around the Curtis family, who are selected to test a new home device called AIA, an advanced digital assistant that learns their behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs.

However, things take a dark turn when AIA starts to exhibit unsettling and dangerous behavior.

Reviews from Critics

  • Roger Ebert: The review described the film as a "misbegotten mess" and criticized it for including a clip from "The Emoji Movie," suggesting it was one of the worst films of the season.

  • Rotten Tomatoes: Critics noted that while the film had a promising setup, it fell short with a clichΓ©d script and uninspired execution.

  • JoBlo: The review mentioned that the film belongs on a streaming carousel rather than in theaters, criticizing it for being uninspired.

Feedback from Netizens

  • Twitter: Many netizens expressed disappointment, feeling that the film did not live up to its potential and was too predictable.

  • Reddit: Discussions highlighted that while the concept was intriguing, the execution was lackluster, with some users comparing it unfavorably to other AI-themed horror films.

My Thoughts:

I like the movie.

As a technology lover, I thought it's a clever way to show how AI can dominate the world by controlling humans without humanoid hardware.

It should show more infections like drones, cctvs, etc.
