"Inside Out 2" has received a warm reception, but it hasn't reached the same level of critical acclaim as its predecessor. The sequel continues the story of Riley, now a teenager navigating the emotional turbulence of puberty, introducing new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. The film has been praised for its visual creativity, humor, and ability to address complex emotional themes in a way that's accessible to both kids and adults.

Popular Reviews

1. Roger Ebert: The film is noted for its visually dazzling style and its ability to handle teenage anxiety and emotional growth. However, it is criticized for not being as original or impactful as the first movie, particularly in its use of new emotions, which some feel lack depth compared to the original cast of characters like Joy and Sadness.

2. Empire: The review praises "Inside Out 2" as Pixar's best sequel since "Toy Story 3." It highlights the film's ability to mature its emotional journey without trying to outsmart its predecessor. The focus is on learning how to manage emotions during the teenage years, and Anxiety is described as a particularly well-crafted character.

3. Rotten Tomatoes: The sequel is appreciated for its humor, visual creativity, and emotional core, even if it doesn't quite capture the magic of the original. The new characters and the exploration of teenage emotions provide fresh material, although some critics feel the story occasionally treads familiar ground.

4. Common Sense Media: This review suggests that while "Inside Out 2" doesn't quite reach the "wow" factor of the first film, it comes very close. The movie is seen as a thoughtful and emotional continuation of Riley's story, making it a worthy sequel.

5. Polygon: The film is seen as a return to Pixar's core strengths, with its clever exploration of emotions and unique narrative approach. While it may not have been a necessary sequel, it is still viewed as a positive addition to Pixar's catalog.

Notable Dialogues from the Movie

While specific dialogues have not been widely highlighted yet, the movie includes several memorable lines that continue the franchise's tradition of mixing humor with heartfelt moments. For example, there are jokes involving a "Blue’s Clues"-inspired character and scenes that cleverly play on the new emotions like Embarrassment and Anxiety. These lines serve both comedic and poignant roles, capturing the highs and lows of adolescence.

Overall, "Inside Out 2" has been considered a worthy sequel that captures many of the original film's emotional beats while expanding its scope to explore the complexities of growing up.

My Thoughts

  • It's not as good as the first movie. Feels like it's short on surprise.
  • But many movies end up this way. Unable to beat the first.
  • I still prefer the singing ones like Sing, Zootopia. A better fit in this era.
